When you’re in Chiang Mai, the majority of the activities are outside. If you’re looking for something to do that is indoors, creative, air-conditioned, has free Wi-Fi; and gives you free coffee, bottled water, and chips, then the Elephant Parade House in Chiang Mai is the place to be.

The thing I loved best about Elephant Parade House is you get to design and paint your own ceramic elephant at a reasonable price. If you choose the 10cm elephant it will cost you 600 Baht ($17); the larger 15cm elephant will cost you 1,000 Baht ($28). With the cost of the elephant, you are provided with an apron, paintbrushes, and all of the colors you will need to bring out your inner artist. As a side note, if you want gold paint, they will charge you an extra 100 Baht.

The paint workshop area is a good size, with space for about 20 artists. When we were at Elephant Parade House, there were only two other artists working on elephants. The workshop also acts as a showroom for some of the other elephants that have been painted by some professional artists and they are all available for purchase.

The hospitability at Elephant Parade House is phenomenal. When we first sat down we were offered bottled water, coffee, and chips. Best of all it’s all free. While I was there, they even kept my coffee nice and full.

Now I would consider myself a creative person. I can always see a vision of what I want in my head, I just have a hard time getting it onto paper, or in this case, an elephant. I was going for an all gray elephant with green and yellow boxes all over. Once I saw how cool the gold looked on the elephant, I decided to switch it to a half gold, half gray.

That hardest part to paint on the elephant is the eyes. If you want some assistance painting the eyes on the elephant, a member of the Elephant Parade house staff will be more than happy to help. I would allow yourself at least two hours to paint your elephant.

When you’re all done painting your elephant and its nice and dry, they’re going to put it into a box, and you’ll now have a great hand painted souvenir to remember your time in Chiang Mai. Something to note is that 20% of their net profits are donated to The Asian Elephant Foundation; so it’s also nice knowing that the money you spend there is going to a good cause.
