BulkTraveler Explores the El Yunque National Forest
While BulkTraveler was on our Puerto Rico Costco tour, we were looking for something fun to do besides going to different Costco location. Shocking, right? We typically use our Costco tours to see some of the local tourist attractions. One of the biggest tourist attractions in Puerto Rico is the El Yunque National Forest.
El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rain forest in the U.S National Forest System. One would imagine that it would be open most of the day, but the hours of the El Yunque National Forest are actually from 7:30am – 6:00pm.
The El Yunque gets upwards of 240 inches of rain per year. While we were there, it rained most of the time, but that didn’t stop us from getting out of our car and exploring.
When heading to El Yunque, don’t enter the rainforest into your GPS, because that is going to take you to the west side of the rainforest and you want to be on the north side of the fountain. Enter ‘El Portal’ into your GPS and that will take you to the main entrance. We made the mistake of going all the way to the west side of the rainforest, where we ended up on a road and had a dog follow us for a bit. I think he was laughing at us, seeing as we were lost and we weren’t getting data reception anymore. We finally had a local give us directions to get us going in the right direction.
When you enter the rainforest, you can pay to get a ticket to the El Portal Rain Forest Center. If we were to go back we wouldn’t purchase a ticket ourselves, because all of the cool things to see are free.
When driving through the rainforest you will see groups of cars parked and that typically has a path leading to a water fall.
The waterfalls are gorgeous. Bring your swimsuit because you can swim at the base of the waterfalls and cool off in the hot and sticky days.
You are going to see all types of lizards, bugs, and wild life. We had a great time, but we weren’t there all day, it was a half day trip because we still had to visit another Costco.
