Costco Vaughan, Ontario Canada – Can I Get A Bag Of Milk?

A few weeks back I made a day trip to Ontario, where I visited seven Costco locations. Wow, I know. This was the first time I was going to venture into a Canadian Costco, so I was excited to say the least.

The first Costco was on 71 Colossus Dr. in Vaughan, Ontario. My first impression from the outside was that the building looked a bit older and it was packed. I had a hard time finding parking and I was actually surprised by the volume of people going into the warehouse.

The Costco locations in Canada go by different warehouse hours than we do here in the United States. Theirs are as follows:

Monday – Friday 10:00 a.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Saturday 9:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Sunday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (6:00 p.m. USA)

As I made my loop around the Vaughan location I noticed that they had very similar products as we have here in the United States. Granted, there was a lot of French on the packaging, but I guess I was in Canada so I can’t complain about that.

As I made my way back to their fresh departments (Deli, Meat & Bakery) I quickly noticed the differences.

In their meat department they show pictures of all of their products on the meat & seafood by the case sign. I’m not a fan of the pictures because they look old and outdated. I don’t think they do the actual product any justice. I believe that if you are buying a case of crab legs, you have a good idea of what crab legs look like.

When you head over to the deli department I noticed that they have the rotisserie chickens priced at 7.99 compared to the 4.99 we charge here in the United States.

Another thing that I found odd was the way they cook their chickens. Instead of using the large rotisserie wheel ovens, they use what looks like a giant pressure/steam cooker. I didn’t purchase a chicken, but now I wish I had, just so I could have tasted it.

To the left of their rotisserie chickens was their deli counter. They sell a lot of different deli items, and I don’t feel like the product is up to the standards that we have become accustomed to here in the United States. For example, their shrimp cocktail looks as if it was just dumped into the container. Here in the United States, the shrimp is placed in a nice circle. The same is done for their shrimp platters; they just dump the shrimp on the tray. If I wanted my shrimp just dumped like that I would just get a bag of frozen shrimp and dump it in a bowl myself.

As I walked into the dairy cooler I noticed all of these bags. I went over and did some further investigation. It turns out Costco in Canada sells all of their milk in these plastic bags. They say it cuts down on cost and helps with shipping. They just buy a milk container and then dump the bags into that. It makes the milk holder reusable and they are able to save a lot of plastic this way.

Some of their packaging looks different even though it’s Kirkland Signature. One thing I was surprised to see was the Dr. Scholl’s custom fit shoe insert machine. I know here in the United States that is not in any of the Costco Locations.

The tire shop offers an oil and filter change for 29.99. That is another example of a service that they offer. Personally I would love it if they would start to do that here. I can drop off my car for an oil change while I do all of my shopping. It would be a win-win. Who knows, maybe they are testing it in Canada and they might bring it over.

Their food court was completely different; I will be having a post just about the Canadian food courts, so for now I will just leave you with a taste of what they offer.

Overall I was very satisfied with my first Canadian Costco location. Things were done such differently that I couldn’t wait to see what the next location would have in store for me.
