It was the end of summer; I was looking for the perfect place to go spend a few days soaking up the few remaining days of summer. I had some Jet Blue miles I was looking to use, so I booked a flight from Chicago O’Hare to Boston.

The plan was to be rent a car and take a ferry from Woods Hole to Oak Bluffs, and spend a few nights at the all new Summercamp Hotel in Martha’s Vineyard. Well, as life would have it, some last minute things come up at work that I had to finish, so my few night trip turned into a one-night trip.

At first, I considered canceling my few night getaway, but I was planning this trip with my sister, Megan, and she was already waiting for me in Boston. So, I decided that I still wanted to get away just one more time for the summer.

Let me tell you, I don’t regret my decision at all.  When I landed at Boston Logan Airport, I met my sister just past security and we headed to pick up our rental car at Avis before heading out for Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

Due to my work obligations, I didn’t get into Boston until around 4pm, which put us in a race against the clock to make it to Woods Hole by the last ferry to Oak Bluffs at 7:20pm. After driving for about an hour, we made a quick McDonald’s stop for a burger and some old burnt coffee. Yes, I did drink the burnt McDonald’s coffee because I had been up since 2am and I was running out of energy quite quickly.

We eventually made it to the parking lot that is close by the ferry station where the rates are $20 per day. After grabbing our night bags, we hopped onto the waiting complementary trolley that would be taking us to the ferry station.

We finally made it to the Woods Hole ferry station… then we realized we missed the last ferry to Oak Bluffs. We weren’t out of luck yet though, because there happened to be one more ferry going to Vineyard Haven, which is just a quick 5 minute Uber ride from the Summercamp hotel.

We bought our one-way ferry ticket for $8.50 each and headed to the Pie in the Sky bakery for a cup of Kona coffee.

The ferry ride was fantastic. The ferry seemed to glide across the water and we sat on the open air deck and enjoyed the summer breeze. The trip from Woods Hole to Vineyard Haven took about 45 minutes.

By the time we arrived at Vineyard Haven, it was pitch black outside. Luckily, there is Uber all over the island, so I just pulled up the Uber app and request a ride to the Summercamp hotel, and within minutes we were on our way to our hotel.

After a quick check-in at the Summercamp hotel, which will have its own full review post, we headed up to our room to come up with a game plan for the rest of the night.

At this point it was now 10:00pm at night, and I had now been awake for 20 hours. When I decided to go spend a few nights in Martha’s Vineyard, there was only one thing that I knew I to do. The thing was to go to Back Door Donuts and have one of their world famous apple fritters. Here was the dilemma, as you know due to the last minute work obligations, my trip was cut down to one night. Back Door Donuts is only open from 7pm-1am so if I wanted to get my hands on one of their world famous apple fritters, I was going to have to toughen up and make the 5-minute trek from Summercamp over to Back Door Donuts.

Back Door Donuts is literally a backdoor of the bakery that they open up and sell doughnuts and apple fritters from. When we got to Back Door Donuts, the line was about 150 people deep, and there was good reason. Everyone wants to get their hands on a warm apple fritter.

The line moved quite quickly, I would say we were through the line in about thirty-five minutes. When it was my turn to order, I ordered a maple-bacon doughnut and one of their world famous apple fritters.

Now don’t get mad if it seems like I’m hyping up this apple fritter, but let me tell you that since I’ve tried their warm apple fritter, I have yet to find one that even comes close to the Back Door Donut’s warm apple fritter. For starters, that apple fritter was larger than my massive hand and when it’s warm, it just melts in your mouth.

Since it was after 11:00pm, I was only planning on eating half of the apple fritter and then saving the other half for breakfast. Well, let’s just say that the apple fritter didn’t even make it halfway back to Summercamp. I did save the doughnut for the next morning, and that was definitely one of the most unique doughnuts I’d ever had; the maple-bacon worked so well together. The only thing the maple-bacon doughnut was missing was a nice cold glass of milk.

So far, my first few hours in Martha’s Vineyard were a complete success. It was a crazy day of travel, but so far it was turning out to be, without a doubt, completely worth it. By the time we made it back to Summercamp, I was wide awake, thanks to my delicious sugar filled apple fritter. After a quick shower, my sugar high had already worn off and I was asleep within minutes of my head hitting the pillow.

Tomorrow would come soon enough, and we already had a day’s worth of activities to pack into just a few hours.
